If you are like 90% of women, then you know very well what cellulite looks like, because you have it on your thighs, buttocks or stomach. Although almost all women have it, there are few who take it for granted and are proud of it. Most of them think that cellulite does not adorn their body, but they look at it as an aesthetic flaw and think about how to get rid of it.

Why and how cellulite develops

These barriers are separated from each other by collagen fibers that extend from the surface of the skin to the deeper layers.

So, fat is not the only answer to the question of what cellulite is. There are other factors at play and this is actually the reason why this is a phenomenon that does not only occur in obese people. And skinny people have cellulite. The fact is, however, that obese people are more prone to cellulite and it is a regular occurrence in them. 

Perhaps the easiest way to explain what cellulite is is as follows:

Fibrous tissues have shortened and thickened collagen fibers that pull the surface of the skin into the depths - towards the deeper tissues. That's how they come to be indentations in cellulite.

At the same time, the increased fat deposits push the skin upwards. The skin is usually less elastic and thinner when cellulite is visible, and fat deposits can be quite large. They push the skin up in this way and that is what creates them those bumps on the skin.

And all this in large numbers is accompanied by swelling and retained fluid in the part of the body affected by cellulite.

This name probably means nothing to you, but we will explain:

  • Edema is a term that denotes the retention of water in the body or part of the body and swelling and for the same reason.
  • Fibrosclerosis refers to hardening and damage to connective tissue
  • Paniculitis is a word denoting inflammation of superficial fat deposits.

Cellulite is a form of fat deposits, but it is not the privilege of only obese people, just as it is not a phenomenon that occurs only in women, although they are more susceptible to this problem. Absolutely everyone can be affected by this phenomenon - both overweight people and skinny people and men.

Men and women are different in many things, and body composition is one of them. When it comes to cellulite, that is, the accumulation of fat deposits on the body, then we must keep in mind that in women they accumulate more on the thighs, buttocks and abdomen. There is often controversy about the causes of cellulite. There are many opinions and attitudes, and the exact and concrete cause has not been singled out yet. Therefore, it is best to consider all potential causes and their combination.

The most common causes of cellulite are:
